Mahomet-Seymour senior Seth Honnigford is looking forward to making a difference in the community while also giving teens an opportunity to have fun.

As part of his Eagle Scout project, Honnigford will host a Super Smash Brothers Tournament on March 8 at the Mahomet Public Library to collect non-perishable food and toiletry items for Mahomet Helping Hands.

The tournament will be held in two sessions: youth through eighth grade will begin at 1:30 p.m., and high school and up will begin at 5:30 p.m. The admission fee is a minimum of three non-perishable or toiletry items.

Honnigford said that the tournament will be a great way to finish his time in scouts because Scouts is a great way to meet people.

“When I started out, there were a lot of people that I knew, but there were also a lot that I didn’t,” Honnigford said.

“It’s helped me explore my hobbies. A lot of people play Magic in my troop and a lot of them play video games. It’s just been a nice bonding experience.”

Honnigford decided to host a Smash Brothers tournament at the library rather than a Magic tournament to encourage more people to participate.

Working with Helping Hands is something that is close to Honnigford’s heart. He said that over the years he’s helped distribute food on Saturday mornings a few times.

While a donation to get into the tournament is required, playing in the tournament is not required to make a donation.

“We will have plenty of bins set up for donations,” he said.

“They mostly said toiletry items are what they encourage,” he said.

Pre-registering at https://forms.gle/xtSQtimXRAiFoPkX8 will help Honnigford prepare for the tournament, but pre-registration is not required.
