Seat belt enforcement ramps up in Champaign County with ‘Click It or Ticket’ campaign May 15–26

The Champaign County Sheriff’s Department is joining law enforcement agencies across Illinois in a stepped-up “Click It or Ticket” seat belt enforcement campaign running from May 15 through May 26.

The annual “Click It or Ticket” enforcement period will bring increased patrols on drivers and passengers who are not wearing seat belts. Deputies will conduct details during both daytime and nighttime hours, with motorists who fail to buckle up facing citations under Illinois seat belt laws.

The Champaign County campaign is part of a broader Illinois initiative that brings together the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police, and hundreds of local agencies in a coordinated two-week effort around Memorial Day.

Nationally, NHTSA promotes “Click It or Ticket” as a high-visibility enforcement campaign to raise awareness of seat belt laws and the consequences of not wearing a seat belt. Law enforcement agencies are encouraged to concentrate resources during this period, when many families are beginning summer travel and roadway traffic is especially heavy.
