Pedal the Preserves on August 17

Champaign County Forest Preserves, in partnership with the Prairie Cycle Club (PCC), will host Pedal the Preserves on August 17. This event encourages outdoor activity and environmental stewardship, aiming to inspire a healthy, active lifestyle while fostering community spirit and awareness about conserving natural areas. Proceeds will benefit the Forest Preserve Friends Foundation.

Pedal the Preserves, more than a mere bike ride, is a celebration of nature and discovery. It brings together bicycling enthusiasts, Forest Preserve supporters, nature lovers, and community members to appreciate the efforts of the Forest Preserves.

Champaign County Forest Preserves encompasses seven forest preserves, totaling over 4,000 acres of forest, prairie, lakes, rivers, and wetlands. This summer’s event will take participants through three locations: Kickapoo Rail Trail, Homer Lake Forest Preserve, and Middle Fork River Forest Preserve. Attendees can also enjoy a bike-to-camp option at Middle Fork River Forest Preserve, Illinois’ only International Dark Sky Park. The event features free live music, food trucks, and beverages. QR codes along the route will provide insights about the preserves.

Pedal the Preserves welcomes participants of all ages and skill levels, making it an inclusive event that encourages community engagement and healthy lifestyles. Whether an avid cyclist or looking for a fun outdoor activity, this event offers something for everyone.

Participants will traverse scenic routes through eastern Champaign County’s landscapes, including Homer Lake Forest Preserve, Kickapoo Rail Trail, and Middle Fork River Forest Preserve. With its captivating natural beauty, Pedal the Preserves promises an unforgettable experience.

  • Time: Check-in between 7 a.m. – 9 a.m.
  • Location: Meier Field, Kickapoo Rail Trail, St. Joseph, Ill.
  • Distance Options:
    • Middle Fork with Camping (Saturday-Sunday): 60-65 miles, optional add-on
    • Middle Fork (Saturday only): 60-65 miles, optional add-on
    • Royal (Saturday only): 40-45 miles
    • Homer Lake (Saturday only): 20-25 miles
    • KRT (Saturday only): Choose your distance, up to 12 miles

Safety is a top priority. Participants are required to wear helmets and follow traffic rules. Volunteers and support staff will be available along the routes to provide assistance.
