Promise March for Humanity in Mahomet on June 8

A peaceful March is being planned for Mahomet on June 8 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

What is being called “Promise March for Humanity” will be a peaceful vigil in remembrance of black lives lost, with speakers, music and a moment of silence. Organizers are also including the idea of making individual promises to spur a continued commitment to ensuring the Mahomet is a welcoming and inclusive community for all.

The group will begin in the green area next to the Village Administration Building, then march to the Mahomet Police Department. More details are to come.

Another protest that was scheduled for June 4 at 4 p.m. has been canceled as the two organizing groups have joined planning efforts.

  1. If Mahomet was inclusive, then y’all wouldn’t complain about Section 8 Housing being built in your neighborhoods.

“It will lower my home value” is not a justifiable excuse to keep people out.

  2. To Alex: I was born and raised in Decatur. I was in high school when Jesse Jackson marched our streets for gang members. Wanna see what Mahomet will look like when you build section 8, go have a visit. Also, why are you assuming section 8 means only black people? And are you also saying black people cant live here unless they live in section 8? You sound pretty racist yourself with that assumption. Mahomet has proven its diversity by the many nationalities and races here running successful businesses. No one has boycotted or thrown temper tantrums like this when any of those businesses opened their doors. We all went and enjoyed the service they are providing. Whether that be food and drink, or goods or services, we all continue to support one another and our local businesses not matter what race, nationality or color. Stop bringing hatred and forcing a divide in a peaceful town that wants to stay peaceful and doesn’t see color.
