New Mahomet electric aggregation program rate to begin Feb. 2023
Village of Mahomet residents have a choice to make: join the municipal electric aggregation, choose a different supplier or elect to remain on utility default supply.
Village residents were notified by mail on Dec. 5 that they are automatically enrolled in the program that gives the municipality the authority to arrange for the supply of electricity for its residential and small commercial retail customers. This measure was approved by vote (2,018 in favor; 1,255 opposed) in 2012. All residents have the option to opt-out without a cancellation fee for 2023 by Dec. 21.
Mahomet’s agreement with Energy Harbor begins on February 2023. Every Mahomet resident participating in the program will return to Ameren for two billing cycles beginning Dec. 16.
A notice on the Village of Mahomet website states, “If you want to participate in the Village of Mahomet’s aggregation program, no action is required, despite any indication to the contrary. If you want to opt-out in order to remain with Ameren after the February start of our aggregation program, or a different supplier, you will be able to do so via an opt-out letter that the new supplier, Energy Harbor, will send to eligible residents and businesses in mid-December. Again, unless you opt-out, you will be automatically enrolled when the Village of Mahomet’s aggregation program, restarting in February.
Ameren will then send residents one more letter, stating the resident’s energy supply is moving to Energy Harbor and that the resident has 10 days to rescind. If the account holder does not opt out, they WILL be enrolled in the Aggregation Program, as an Energy Harbor representative confirmed. If you do opt-out and return to Ameren or other supplier, you cannot return to the Aggregation Program for 12 months. “
The aggregation program’s rates are set to increase from $0.04475 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) to $0.122 cents/kWh for a 22-month term. Comparatively, Ameren’s price as of October 1, 2022 through May 2023 is $0.12236 cents per kilowatt-hour.
“While the rate difference is less than past bidding has yielded, the Aggregation Program does offer price protection for the 22-month term if Ameren’s rates continue to rise,” the Village notice says.
