National Average Hits $4.45, Up 35 Cents in a Week Amid U.S.–Iran Conflict

The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in the United States is about $4.45 as of May 3, the highest level since 2022, according to AAA data. Gas in Mahomet is nearly $4.80 per gallon.
When Trump took office in January 2025, gas was roughly $3.10 per gallon.
A week ago, the national average was $4.099, meaning prices are up nearly 35 cents in just seven days. Diesel now averages $5.642 per gallon, while premium gasoline is at $5.301.
AAA and federal data attribute the spike primarily to higher crude oil prices amid the ongoing conflict involving the United States and Iran.
