The unbeaten Mahomet-Seymour Junior High baseball team needed a two-out, walk-off double from Gavin Bailey in the bottom of the seventh inning to salvage a 3-2 triumph over Champaign St Matthew on Thursday (Sept. 3) in Mahomet.

Bailey’s hit, combined with an error on the play, accounted for the game’s final two runs.

M-S (6-0) had to play catchup from the outset. St. Matthew scored both of its runs in the top of the first inning.

From there, Bulldog pitchers Peyton Cox and Nolan Johnson combined to pitch six consecutive scoreless innings. Neither M-S pitcher issued a walk.

Cox (3-0) yielded five hits in five innings and struck out nine batters. Johnson followed with two hitless innings and fanned five. He earned a save.

Raymond Long (2-for-3) was the lone Bulldog with more than one hit. Long, Lucas Dyer and Camden Heinold scored the Bulldogs’ runs.

M-S is 2-0 in one-run games and has not allowed more than two runs in four of its first six games.

The team returns to action on Wednesday (Sept. 9) against Champaign Edison at Spalding Field.
