Mahomet-Seymour Soccer ends in draw with Champaign Central

By Fred Kroner

After two matches, both at home, Mahomet-Seymour’s boys’ soccer team has not permitted a goal.

However, the Bulldogs were not able to capture a win in their second game, battling to a 0-0 draw on Saturday (March 13) at Middletown Field against Champaign Central.

In 2019 – the most recent boys’ soccer season – both M-S and Central won regional championships.

“While Mahomet had a bit more of the possession in the first half, Central had more dangerous opportunities,” Bulldog head coach Jeremy Davis said. “In the second half, Mahomet adjusted and were able to control more of the game and the chances.”

Davis praised the performance of his defensive brigade against the Maroons for keeping the season shutout streak intact.

“The back six for Mahomet were exceptional all day,” Davis said. “Keagon Ashby had a fantastic save in goal on a Central freekick.

“Both teams looked to isolate defenders wide. Xavier Schmidt was relentless. He continuously made 60-yard runs wide in the attack only to work back and stop Central’s attack into those same areas. Braeden Heinold, in his first week of starting for the ‘Dogs, was solid. Central looked to play into his area with him isolated, and Braeden was continuously up to the challenge.”

Their teammates were also up to the challenge.

“All the backs were solid in their tackling, rarely losing duels to the Central attackers,” Davis said. “Kobe Eisenmenger and Aidan Hegarty were both consistently in charge of keeping the backline clear. Their organization and leading of the backline was critical to the success of the day.

“Logan Woodward played like a man among boys. The senior captain brought a cavalier attitude after a slow start for the Bulldogs. He consistently bodied the midfielders off the ball and got on his horse to move play up the field. He was exceptional.”

M-S (1-0-1) returns to action on Tuesday (March 16) at home against Effingham.

In Saturday’s junior varsity match, Central edged the Bulldogs (1-1), 1-0.
