Mahomet-Seymour picks up team honors at Pontiac Relays

Mahomet-Seymour won nine relay events on Tuesday (April 26) and cruised to team honors in the six-school Pontiac Relays.

M-S collected 198 points. Runner-up Pontiac ended with 172 ½ points. 

The Bulldogs won three varsity relays, including one that is not contested in most meets, a 4,000-meter distance medley that starts with a 1,200-meter leg and finishes with a 1,600-meter leg.

The M-S runners on the distance medley were Jonah Singer, Blake Dillman, Mitchell McAnally and Kyle Nofziger. Their time was 8 minutes, 48.51 seconds.

The Bulldogs won the 3,200-meter relay in a race that featured Dillman, Taylor Fan, Avery Seaman and Karsten Waisath. Their time was 9:04.08.

Teaming up in the 1,600-meter relay were Tyler Lewis, Singer, Nolan Nierenhausen and McAnally. Their time was 3:39.58.

M-S was also victorious in three freshmen-sophomore relays.

The 800-meter relay unit consisted of Jayvon Irwin, Deangelo Hughey, Alex O’Brian and Ryken Kirby. Their time was 1:38.83.

Teaming up in the 1,600-meter relay were Hughey, O’Brian, Kaden Jackson and Joshua Franklin. Their time was 3:43.55.

In the 440-meter hurdle shuffle, the foursome of Luke Johnson, Ian Dobrucki, Travis Hoffman and Gavin Hammerschmidt raced to victory. Their time was 1:19.11.

M-S prevailed in three field event relays, which were scored by totaling the distance of four competitors from each school.

The entrants in the pole vault relay were Alex Carpenter, Ryken Kirby, Seth Christianson and Travis Hoffman.

The members of the shot put relay were Robert Byron, Sam Garber, DeAndre Hughey and Austin Crull.

The triple jump relay consisted of Cole Marshall, Gabe Labbe, Ellis Tira and Quentin Goodie.

M-S had winners in two individual events.

Hayden Grotelueschen led a 1-2 Bulldog finish in the 1,600 meters. His time was 5:08.17. Next to finish was Benjamin Wallace (5:10.66).

In the discus, Robert Byron posted one of the top marks in school history with a winning toss of 157 feet, 4 inches. Teammate Caleb Boykin was second (122 feet, 8 inches).

Byron’s performance ranks 12th on the all-time M-S list and is one of the state’s top10 this spring in Class 2A.

M-S returns to action on Friday (April 29) at the Spartan Classic in St. Joseph.
