Mahomet-Seymour Junior High wins $12,000 in Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Competition

Mahomet-Seymour Junior High has been named the State Winner for Illinois in the 14th annual Samsung Solve for Tomorrow STEM competition. This selection secures a $12,000 Samsung technology package to enhance their educational capabilities further.

Mahomet-Seymour Junior High proposed a solution to a pressing sports safety concern. The junior high’s project focuses on the development of a multi-sport jersey/shirt designed to offer rib cage and heart protection. The apparel aims to safeguard athletes from minor trunk injuries and the potentially fatal condition known as commotio cordis, a sudden cardiac arrest caused by a blunt impact to the chest area.

As one of the 50 State Winners, Mahomet-Seymour Junior High now advances in the competition, with the next phase involving the creation of a three-minute video showcasing their STEM solution to the community issue they’ve identified. This opportunity not only allows the students to document their project’s development but also enables them to articulate the significance and potential impact of their solution on sports safety.

Ten National Finalists will be selected in late March, each receiving a $50,000 prize package. The competition will culminate in April when Samsung Solve for Tomorrow names three schools as National Winners, each receiving $100,000 in prize packages consisting of Samsung tech and classroom supplies.

The competition’s focus on problem-based learning, environmental stewardship, and entrepreneurship serves as a platform for students to engage in hands-on learning and apply STEM in tangible, impactful ways.
