Mahomet-Seymour Baseball wins Class 3A IESA Regional Title

The Bulldogs won a regional championship on Saturday (Sept. 26) by overpowering Monticello 11-5 in a Class 3A IESA postseason title game in Mahomet.

Peyton Cox (5-0) pitched six innings and earned the victory. He allowed six hits, walked two and struck out four.

Lucas Dyer worked the seventh inning, yielding three hits and fanning one batter.

The 15-hit M-S attack was led by Nolan Johnson, who went 4-for-4.

Teammates with two hits apiece were Nolan Sanderson, Camden Heinold, Henry Wagner and Mason Orton.

Heinold and Wagner each knocked in two runs. Johnson, Sanderson, Wagner and Orton all scored two runs.

M-S took a 3-0 lead after one inning and never trailed.

On Tuesday (Sept. 29), M-S played host to Paxton-Buckley-Loda in what M-S coach Brian Bajer referred to as “an unofficial sectional championship game.”

Despite being limited to three hits, the Bulldogs pushed across two runs in the eighth inning to secure a 5-3 victory.

M-S lost a pre-game coin flip and was the visiting team while playing on its home field.

The M-S hits were by Johnson, Wagner and Orton.

Eight members of the Bulldogs’ lineup drew walks.

Scoring the M-S runs were Heinold, Gavin Bailey, Wagner, Dyer and Ben Weddle.

Johnson pitched the first six innings, scattering nine hits and striking out six. Dyer (2-0) pitched the last two innings and picked up the win. Dyer allowed two hits and struck out three of the eight batters that he faced.

M-S finishes the season with a 12-1 record and outscored its opposition, 102-39.
