In a world often marked by uncertainty and turmoil, acts of kindness and compassion shine brightly, offering hope and solace to those in need. Greta Gosnell, a resident of Mahomet, Ill., exemplifies this spirit of generosity as she opens her home to Ukrainian refugees fleeing their homeland in the wake of the Russian invasion, facilitated by a bill signed by President Biden called “United for Ukraine”. In an exclusive interview, Gosnell detailed her journey of welcoming a displaced family into her community and the challenges and triumphs they’ve encountered along the way.
The decision to sponsor a Ukrainian family was a thoughtful one for Gosnell and her family. Drawing from their experience sponsoring families as a military family, Gosnell felt compelled to extend a helping hand to those affected by the war in Ukraine. With ample space in their home and a supportive community in Mahomet, Gosnell saw an opportunity to provide refuge and support to a family in need.
“It was a combination of having the space and the knowledge of the sponsorship process that motivated us to take action,” Gosnell explained. “Mahomet is a welcoming community, and we wanted to do our part to help those fleeing conflict find safety and stability.”
Navigating the sponsorship process proved to be a journey in itself, but Gosnell’s determination and resourcefulness saw her through. Utilizing online platforms and nonprofit organizations, she connected with a Ukrainian family consisting of three generations, including a grandmother, mother, and 12-year-old daughter. The men of the family were serving in the military and had to stay behind but were eventually released and reunited in December. After a thorough approval process involving financial documentation and background checks, Gosnell received the green light to welcome the family into her home.
The arrival of the Ukrainian family marked the beginning of a new chapter, filled with both challenges and moments of joy. Gosnell vividly recalled the mix of emotions as she greeted the family at O’Hare Airport, recognizing the courage it took for them to embark on a journey to a new country.
“It was late at night, and as we drove home through the quiet countryside, I was struck by their resilience and determination,” Gosnell shared. “Despite the language barrier, we found ways to communicate and connect, bridging cultural differences with empathy and understanding.”
Adapting to American life posed its own set of challenges for the Ukrainian family, from learning to navigate unfamiliar customs to securing employment and housing. However, with Gosnell’s guidance and the support of her extended family and community, the family gradually acclimated to their new surroundings.
“My sisters, my mom, and I rallied together to support the family every step of the way,” Gosnell explained. “From fundraising for airline tickets to assisting with job applications and navigating bureaucratic processes, we were determined to see them thrive.”
The journey was not without its obstacles, including the abrupt cessation of resettlement benefits due to government shutdowns. Yet, through perseverance and collaboration, Gosnell and her family worked tirelessly to ensure the well-being and integration of the Ukrainian family into their community.
“As a military family, we understand the importance of solidarity and support during challenging times,” Gosnell emphasized. “Our goal was not only to provide temporary shelter but to empower the family to rebuild their lives and pursue their dreams.”
Looking ahead, Gosnell remains committed to supporting other sponsors interested in extending a lifeline to displaced families. Despite the current political climate surrounding immigration, she remains hopeful that acts of compassion and solidarity will prevail, bridging divides and fostering understanding.
“In times of crisis, it’s easy to feel helpless, but every act of kindness, no matter how small, makes a difference,” Gosnell reflected. “Together, we can create a world where compassion knows no borders, and every individual is valued and supported.”
