Mahomet Family Dentistry Athlete of the Week: The MSJHS 8th grade basketball team

The Mahomet-Seymour eighth-grade boys’ basketball team clinched a spot in the IESA Class 4A state quarterfinals on Feb. 5. Their recent victory in the Sectional Championship against Crete-Monee by a narrow margin of 37-35 was a testament to their resilience and teamwork.

The Bulldogs found themselves trailing by four points as they entered the final period of the game. However, a furious rally led by Jackson Golden, who scored six of his game-high 16 points in the last quarter, and Tristen Adams, who added four crucial points, turned the tide in favor of Mahomet-Seymour. Preston Clark’s sharpshooting from beyond the arc added another dimension to the Bulldogs’ offense, contributing six points with two three-pointers. The team’s precision from the free-throw line was also a critical factor in their victory, hitting 9 of 10 attempts, showcasing their ability to perform under pressure.

This season, the Bulldogs amassed an impressive record of 26-1. Their journey to the state quarterfinals was highlighted by notable performances, including a season-high 24 points from Golden in the regional championship game against Danville North Ridge. Clark has been a consistent threat from three-point range, making shots in 22 of the team’s 27 games, while Adams has been nearly automatic from the free-throw line, hitting 15 of his last 16 attempts.

The team’s success is not solely attributed to their offensive prowess. Their defensive efforts have been equally impressive, allowing them to overcome deficits and close out games when it matters most. The Bulldogs’ ability to adjust and execute their game plan has been evident throughout the season, culminating in their thrilling come-from-behind victory to secure the sectional championship.

As they prepare for their state quarterfinal matchup against Markham Prairie Hills, the Bulldogs carry with them not only the hopes of their school but also the pride of a program with a rich history of success. Coached by Matt Clark and supported by a talented roster of 14 players, Mahomet-Seymour’s eighth-grade boys’ basketball team is poised to continue their remarkable season.
