M-S Soccer remains unbeaten in Apollo Conference

By Fred Kroner

Mahomet-Seymour’s girls’ soccer team continued its domination of Apollo Conference opponents on Thursday (May 5) by posting a 10-1 triumph at Lincoln.

Against four Apollo foes, M-S has outscored the opposition by a combined margin of 34-1.

Brea Benson, Emma Dallas and Cayla Koerner all scored two goals against the Railsplitters.

M-S led 7-0 at intermission.

“M-S hit the road and unleashed devastation which only has two apt comparisons: that of the famous battle against El Guapo at Santo Domingo, or that of the destruction captured in the cubist work of Picasso’s Guernica,”  Bulldog head coach Jeremy Davis said. “The girls were able to again invoke the mercy rule by halftime.”

Also registering scores for the Bulldogs were Elise Hertling, Amelia Osman, Lauren Schnepper and Delaney Smith.

Dallas and Osman became the 11th and 12th Bulldogs to score a varsity goal this spring.

Brea Benson increased her team-lead in assists to eight by providing three helpers at Lincoln. Nyah Biegler and Grace Lietz had two assists apiece. Kamryn Frost and Hertling each had one assist.

Fifteen squad members have either a goal or an assist through six matches.

“As there was no JV game, we expanded the roster and many younger girls were able to find success as they played the second half,” Davis said. “Even then, Emma Dallas had to be restrained as she was finding the goal a bit too often as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 9-0 lead.

“Early on in the season, she flew under the radar, but has blossomed like a spring lilac this past week.”

On Friday (May 7), in a showdown between two of the state’s top-10 ranked Class 3A programs, M-S edged Rochester 4-3 at home.

Biegler scored two goals and Hertling contributed two assists. Benson had one goal and one assist. Koerner added her team-leading 13th goal of the season.

Koerner lifted the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead, with an assist from Hertling.

“The girls played really well in first half, but looked like they had nothing left in the cistern the final 20 minutes,” Davis said. “The team adapted well to an injury that made some players shift to some new positions.

“Emma Dallas was able to step up following a solid JV showing, and give the team a huge boost playing the majority of the game while filling in. Janel Straub played huge in the backline, taking on the best attacker we’ve seen to date. She did a great job at a difficult task.”

M-S led 3-1 at halftime.

M-S (6-1) returns to action on Tuesday (May 11) at home against Mattoon. Rochester drops to 5-2 for the season.
