M-S boys’ track and field takes title at Bloomington Invitational

Senior C.J. Shoaf and junior Jonah Singer were individual winners for the Mahomet-Seymour boys’ track and field team, helping the Bulldogs to the team title in the eight-school Bloomington Invitational on Thursday (May 17).

For the third consecutive outdoor meet, Shoaf broke the M-S school record in the 110-meter high hurdles. His winning mark was 14.15 seconds.

He also remained unbeaten this spring in the high jump, clearing 6 feet, 10 inches and added a third win in the 300 intermediate hurdles. His time was 39.31 seconds.

Singer prevailed in the 1,600-meter race, covering the distance in 4:35.49. In the same event, teammate Kyle Nofziger was third in 4:39.55.

Four other Bulldogs secured runner-up finishes. Deangelo Hughey was second in the 200 meters (24.15 seconds). Joseph Scheele was second in the 800 meters (2:02.52), Hayden Grotelueschen was second in the 3,200 meters (10:40.50) and Will Parrott was second in the long jump (18 feet, 7 ½ inches).

Ben Wallace was just behind Grotelueschen in the 3,200, running third in 10:48.10. In the 800 meters, Taylor Fan placed seventh in 2:13.14.

M-S received points from all four of its relays, including the second-place finishing 800-meter relay. The foursome of Skyler Yancy, Hughey, Parrott and Quenton Rogers were timed in 1:36.26.

The 400-meter relay captured third place, with a time of 45.40 seconds.  Sharing the baton were Yancy, Hughey, Tyler Lewis and Rogers.

The 3,200-meter relay took fourth place. Teaming up in the race were Matthew Sims, Grant Smysor, Karsten Waisath and Caleb Dowers. Their composite time was 9:14.81.

The M-S 1,600-meter relay ended in seventh place. Nathan Lundstrom, Erik Christianson, Avery Seaman and Sims teamed up for a clocking of 3:57.94.

Lewis (seventh in 56.73 seconds) and Lundstrom (eighth in 56.84 seconds) were placers individually in the 400 meters.

The Bulldogs’ other points came in field events. Sam Garber was eighth in the discus (118 feet), Gabe Labbe was eighth in the long jump (16-6 ¾ ), Yancy was ninth in the pole vault (10-4), Karson McKee was ninth in the shot put (38 feet, 6 inches), Cole Marshall was ninth in the triple jump (34-9) and Nick Golden was 10th in the triple jump (34-5).

M-S amassed 102 points. Runner-up Normal Community had 95 points and third-place Bloomington ended with a tally of 88 points.

M-S returns to action on Thursday (May 20) in the Apollo Conference meet.
