Discover the Sweet Taste of Tradition at Vermilion County’s Maple Syrup Fest

The Vermilion County Conservation District will host their annual Maple Syrup Fest at the Forest Glen Preserve on Sunday, March 17, 2024, from 10 am to 2 pm. This year’s fest promises an immersive experience into the world of maple syrup production, a tradition that has sweetened the region for years.

In the crisp January air, the skilled hands of volunteers tapped 500 sugar maple trees, setting the stage for a syrup-making spectacle. This meticulous preparation underpins the festival’s highlight – the transformation of sap into syrup at the Sugar Bush, an experience that offers attendees a firsthand look at this fascinating process.

The festival is not just about watching; it’s about participating. Visitors will have the chance to tap into the syrup-making process, literally, by trying their hand at inserting a metal spile into a tree trunk. But the immersion doesn’t stop there. The event is layered with activities that promise to enrich, entertain, and educate.

Guided hikes along Willow Creek Trail will delve into the history and folklore of maple syrup, departing every 30 minutes until 1 pm. These walks offer a blend of natural beauty and storytelling that captivates both the young and the young at heart. For those intrigued by the past, the Pioneer Homestead Cabin stands ready to transport visitors back in time, offering a glimpse into the lives of early settlers.

The Nature Center will host a craft activity for children, adding a creative twist to the day’s educational offerings. And of course, what’s a Maple Syrup Fest without a taste of the star attraction? The Gannett Education Center will serve up French Toast Stick and Sausage Baskets, drizzled with Forest Glen’s own maple syrup, for $6 a basket. With carry-out options available, it’s a sweet deal that’s hard to pass up.

While all activities are free, the French Toast and Sausage basket, additional 2oz cups of syrup, and Forest Glen Maple Syrup Pints or Quarts are available for purchase. It’s a chance to take a piece of the festival home, whether it’s a pint ($15) or quart ($30) of syrup or a carry-out container for the delicious baskets.

Situated at 20301 E. 900 North Road, Westville, IL 61883, Forest Glen Preserve offers a picturesque backdrop for this beloved community event. With activities running concurrently and the last guided hike setting off at 1 pm, attendees are encouraged to arrive early to fully enjoy the fest.
