Junior Cayla Koerner continued her climb up the list in Mahomet-Seymour girls’ soccer record books on Thursday (May 27) in the Bulldogs’ regular-season finale.

Koerner notched four goals along with four assists as M-S won at Mattoon 12-1 to clinch an undefeated (10-0 record) Apollo Conference season. The Green Wave are 13-4 overall and finish second in league play with a 7-3 record.

For the season, Koerner has hit 42 goals, one away from matching the 2018 single-season school mark of 43 held by Meredith Johnson-Monfort.

Koerner has 70 career varsity goals.

She had plenty of help in a rain-delayed match against the Green Wave. The action was halted for 90 minutes for a storm to pass.

Senior Nyah Biegler celebrated her birthday by scoring two goals and assisting on three others. Brea Benson contributed two goals and two assists. Elise Hertling also netted two goals.

Grace Lietz and Lauren Schnepper each hit the back of the net once. Lietz added two assists.

M-S held a 6-0 lead at intermission.

“Mattoon looked to play a tactile game, attempting to slow Mahomet down by increasing the physicality,” M-S coach Jeremy Davis said. “The ladies were able to match it and continue to win the ball and play it to teammates.

“After the rain delay, the Bulldogs were once again able to jump out to a two-goal lead in the first 10 minutes.”

In Apollo play this season, M-S outscored its 10 opponents by a combined 85-4 margin, allowing none of its league foes to score more than one goal.

M-S (14-2) has one remaining home match. The Bulldogs will play a Class 2A sectional quarterfinal match at Middletown Field on Friday (June 4).

The opponent will be either fifth-seeded Danville or fourth-seeded Lincoln, who play one another on Tuesday (June 1) in Lincoln. M-S is the No. 1 seed on its side of the bracket.
