Sangamon River Showcase Brings Watershed Science and Outdoor Fun to Mahomet

The Upper Sangamon River Conservancy (USRC) invites the public to the Sangamon River Showcase on May 9, from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Izaak Walton Cabin in Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve in Mahomet.

Hosted in partnership with the Champaign County Forest Preserve District, this free, family-friendly event celebrates the Sangamon River’s ecology through interactive exhibits and hands-on activities.

The showcase highlights USRC’s work in the Sangamon River watershed, featuring a freshwater mussel shell display, preserved aquatic invertebrates, and live fish to educate visitors about local biodiversity. Attendees can explore exhibits on mussel research, birdhouse projects, and river cleanup efforts, all aimed at promoting watershed health. One of the event’s highlights includes the opportunity to test a canoe or kayak on the Sangamon River.
