For the second time in three days, sophomore Savannah Orgeron reached a season-high for points scored on Saturday (Feb. 13), sparking Mahomet-Seymour to a come-from-behind 51-42 girls’ basketball victory over visiting Teutopolis.
Orgeron scored a game-high 23 points. She drilled 11 free throws in a row and overall was 13-for-15 from the line.
M-S fell behind 9-0 and trailed after each of the first three quarters.
The fourth-quarter rally was sparked by 9-for-11 accuracy from the free throw line.
Nichole Taylor tallied 12 points and Cayla Koerner added 11 points for the Bulldogs.
Following the slow start, M-S coach Garret Risley said, “we settled down and hit the open shots we’d missed starting out. Great group effort defensively led to our offense.”
The defensive catalyst was Abigail Bunting, who set the tone on the top of the defense.
Taylor pulled down seven rebounds, Orgeron had four rebounds and Bunting collected three rebounds. Koerner totaled two steals.
On Thursday (Feb. 11), Orgeron scored what was then a season-high 21 points as M-S reached the .500 mark with a 53-44 win at home over Taylorville.
Orgeron also cleared a team-high seven rebounds. She hit three three-pointers and was 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
The balanced M-S offensive attack included 10 points from Taylor, nine from Durbin Thomas, seven from Koerner and six from Bunting.
Taylor hauled down six rebounds. Bunting had a team-high four steals. Koerner and Orgeron each blocked two shots.
The Bulldogs (3-2) return to action on Thursday (Feb. 18) at Lincoln in an Apollo Conference contest.
