By Fred Kroner
Karley Yergler tossed her 13th shutout of the season and tied the Mahomet-Seymour single-season home run record on Monday (May 16) as the Bulldogs blanked visiting Danville, 6-0.
Yergler scattered two hits and walked one hitter. She struck out 18.
Offensively, she struck two home runs, matching the season record (14) she first set as a junior. Yergler drove in four runs.
Jayden Hannah scored two runs. Abbey Akers and Madi White tallied one run apiece.
Also registering a hit for M-S were Akers, Kenadi Granadino, Jessica Hawk and Maddie Logsdon.
The win against Danville enabled the Bulldogs to reach the 20-win mark in softball for the fourth time in school history. The school’s other 20-win seasons were in 2004, 2012 and 2013.
On Tuesday (May 17), the Bulldogs split a doubleheader at home against Mattoon, to wrap up the Apollo Conference portion of their schedule.
Behind Yergler’s three-hitter, M-S won the opener, 10-3. She walked no one and fanned 16, reaching double figures for the 17th game. Yergler has a 19-2 season record.
Mattoon rebounded to win the nightcap, 18-5.
Yergler socked a double and a home run in each game. In the process, she shattered the school’s single-season home run record that she established last year. She has hit 16 homers as a senior, including 11 in her last 11 games.
Logsdon led the M-S offense for the day. She went 6-for-7 overall with three hits in each game. She pounded three doubles.
Yergler ended the day 5-for-7, Akers was 4-for-7 and Hannah was 3-for-7. Maddie Cortez had two hits, two stolen bases and three RBI in the first game.
Yergler pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief of Akers in Game 2 and recorded five strikeouts. For the spring, she has struck out 292 hitters in 132 1/3 innings.
M-S (21-5) returns to action on Tuesday (May 24) in a Class 3A regional semifinal game at home against either Centennial or Rantoul.
