Mahomet-Seymour junior Blake Wolters, a Purdue recruit who rewrote a chunk of the school’s single-season baseball record book this spring, was selected as a Class 3A All-State first-teamer by the Illinois Coaches Association.
Wolters broke the single-season strikeout record (115) and tied the mark for pitching wins in a season (10). He also shattered the record for doubles in a season (21).
The ICA honored 26 baseball players statewide on its All-State first team.
Four of the six members of M-S’ Apollo Conference championship baseball team who were voted onto the all-league first team were unanimous selections.
The universal picks were Wolters (as a pitcher and as an outfielder), senior pitcher Zach Courson, senior catcher Brayden Smith and junior first baseman Carter Johnson.
Other Bulldogs on the 12-player all-conference first unit were junior outfielders Mateo Casillas and Carter Selk.
Wolters, Smith and Johnson all batted over .430 for the season. Courson was the winning pitcher in seven games for the 27-6 Bulldogs, who lost in the sectional championship game to an opponent (Chatham Glenwood) which placed second in the 3A state tournament.
Selk and Casillas both hit over .350 for the spring and combined to drive 21 of their 65 hits for extra bases.
Wolters, who averaged 1.96 strikeouts per inning, was honored as an all-conference first-teamer for the second year in a row.
M-S finished Apollo Conference play with an 11-1 league record.
