By Fred Kroner
Mahomet-Seymour junior Ainsley Winters put together rounds of 76 and 77 to tie for 14th in the girls’ IHSA Class 1A golf tournament at Decatur’s Red Tail Run Golf Course.
The two-day event ended on Saturday (Oct. 9).
Winters is the first top-15 state finisher in the history of the M-S girls’ golf program. The IHSA awards medals to the top 15 individuals.
She started with a four-over-par 76 on Friday, collecting 14 pars and four bogeys.
On Saturday, she produced three birdies, nine pars and six bogeys. Two of the holes where she scored bogeys in the first round, she came back with birdies in the finals (Nos. 9 and 11).
Winters ended in a tie for 14th with Waterloo’s Reese Kite (83-70) and Effingham St. Anthony’s Lauren Schwing (78-75).
Seven of the players who finished ahead of Winters at state were seniors. The Class 1A champion was senior Gracie Piar, from Alton Marquette. She carded rounds of 65 and 71, for a 136 and a five-stroke victory over Pontiac senior Dani Schrock.
For the season, Winters had an M-S team-best 41.4 nine-hole average.
