Wennmaker and Sieg win season-opening golf tournament at Lake of the Woods

MAHOMET – Eleven teams entered the two-person season-opening golf tournament during the weekend at Lake of the Woods.
Emerging as champions of the two-day event, which ended on Sunday (April 25), was the duo of Matt Wennmaker and Ben Sieg.
They were one of three groups tied for first after Saturday’s action (with 68s) but pulled out a 5-stroke victory, totaling an overall 171.
The format was better ball on the front nine on Saturday and alternate shot on the back nine on Saturday.
On Sunday, it shifted to a scramble on the front nine followed by total combined score on the back nine.
Wennmaker and Sieg posted the top score on the better ball format (31).
David Bonnett and Rick Finley (who finished in a tie for second overall with a 176) shared the lowest score for the alternate shot (35) with Harry Clore and Kevin Clore.
Wennmaker and Sieg were the leaders in the scramble (30).
The team of Grant Kinkelaar and Ben Crane (who also ended in a second-place tie) were the leaders on the combined score format (71).
Saturday’s co-leaders, besides Wennmaker and Sieg, were Bonnett and Finley along with Kyle McDonald and Dewey Brown. All three groups started with 68s.
For Sunday action only, the co-leaders were Wennmaker and Sieg, along with Kinkelaar and Crane, both with 103s.
Placing fourth in the weekend event were Jordan Abdel-Haq and Brad Slocum. Their combined score was 178.
