“Welcome to the Prairie” scheduled for Sept. 10

Go back in time and experience what life was like in nineteenth-century east-central Illinois at the Museum of the Grand Prairie during the popular “Welcome to the Prairie” event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on September 10.

The day begins with artisan demonstrations, including blacksmithing featuring renowned blacksmiths and outdoor cooking. The afternoon is filled with hands-on activities, like candle dipping and butter churning American folk music, dancing and 19th century schoolhouse lessons alongside an opportunity to discover methods of textile work.

This year’s event is being held in collaboration with the UIUC YMCA Welcoming Week. Through Welcoming Week, organizations and communities bring together neighbors of all backgrounds to build strong connections and affirm the importance of welcoming and inclusive places in achieving collective prosperity.

The day’s festivities will also include guided nature hikes offered in multiple languages exploring the Grand Prairie region’s natural past and present, and an opportunity to make hand-cranked ice cream or ice cream in a bag with a new friend.

This event is open to all ages and is free. For more info: (217) 586-2612 or pcain@ccfpd.org.
