Water rates slightly increase, Village to accept Visa
The Village of Mahomet made it easier for residents to pay their water and wastewater bills Tuesday night.
The Village entered an agreement with Payment Services Network, Inc. to provide residents with the option to use their Visa card to pay their bill. Residents will also have the option to sign up for Direct Debit as an alternative automatic payment.
Currently, residents utilize an E-pay option through the State Treasurer’s website, but the E-pay option does not accept Visa.
The agreement will also give the Village the capability to email bills to customers, and allow residents to view their bill online.
The Board of Trustees also increased the water rate one-cent to 36 cents per hundred gallons. They also raised wastewater rates to $1.03 per hundred gallons.
Village residents have seen water rates increase over four years to pay for the expansion of the wastewater treatment plant. This is the last year for this increase.
Mayor Patrick Brown said water rates will likely level out over the next few years, and possibly even decrease if the Mahomet’s Village population increases. He also stated, though, the Village learned to have money in reserve for wastewater expansion and maintenance as they went through the expansion process eight years ago.
