Varga breaks school-record in final meet
By Fred Kroner
Mahomet-Seymour freshman Aron Varga finished the boys’ swimming season exactly the same way as he started it.
Back on Feb. 13, in his high school debut, Varga broke the school record in the 200-yard individual medley.
In his season finale on Wednesday (March 10), he lowered his M-S mark by 3 ½ seconds. His winning effort at Pontiac was 2 minutes, 9.96 seconds.
For good measure, Varga added a second school record in his season-ending meet. He was the runner-up in the 500-yard freestyle, but was timed in 5:28.36.
M-S finished a school-best 8-3 season record with a 95-78 loss to Pontiac.
Junior Max Katz achieved season-best marks in two events. He won the diving competition with a score of 194.64 points. Katz placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (1:02.50).
Three other Bulldogs were the runner-up in an individual event.
Sophomore Mitch McAnally was second in the 100-yard freestyle, freshman Owen Kearns was second in the 200-yard freestyle and senior teammate Zach Orr was second in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Sophomore Mark Gutierrez was third in the 100-yard breaststroke, Kearns was third in the 100-yard butterfly and McAnally was third in the 50-yard freestyle.
