Turkey Trot becomes Thanksgiving tradition
Before Mahomet residents sit down to eat the turkey, mashed potatoes and pies, the Mahomet Parks and Recreation Department will give them a chance to stretch their legs in the 2013 Turkey Trot.
“It’s the perfect way to kick off your Thanksgiving day with friends and family,” said MPRD Director Dan Waldinger. “The best part it, it’s for a great cause.”
Walkers, runners and trotters are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food donation on race day to support Mahomet Helping Hands. Proceeds for the Turkey Trot will advance the common good in the Mahomet community by supporting Mahomet Helping Hands and MPRD Youth Scholarship Fund.
The MPRD Youth Scholarship Program allows kids with financial challenges in the Mahomet community to participate in recreation programming. Mahomet Helping Hands is a non-profit organization that provides food and clothing assistance to people living within the Mahomet-Seymour School District.
“On a day that we give thanks, it seems appropriate to have an event that gives back to the community,” Waldinger said.
Participants who register by Nov. 19 will receive a t-shirt. Registration is $10. Children under 5 are free. The race will begin at the Elks Lake Pavilion at the Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve.
