By Fred Kroner
Mahomet-Seymour’s girls’ golf team placed fourth in the 10-school Rantoul Class 2A regional tournament on Thursday (Sept. 28) and missed qualifying for sectionals as a team by one position.
However, the Bulldogs’ top five players all extended their seasons by placing among the top 10 individuals in a field of 61 competitors.
The top 10 players (plus ties) not on an advancing team are automatic sectional qualifiers.
Freshman Sophie Park shot an 88 and was 13th overall (including individuals from teams that qualified for the sectional).
Sophomore Brooke Hartman fired an 89 to finish in 14th place. Senior Jama Craig tied for 15th after carding a 90.
Other teammates moving on to the sectional are junior Sydney Carleton (20th with a 93) and Elena Tompkins (tie for24th with a 95).
In addition to the sectional qualifiers, M-S had one other regional competitor. Kalista Granadino posted a 105 and placed 33rd.
The Bulldogs’ qualifiers will play in the Normal Sectional at Ironwood Golf Course on Monday (Oct. 2).
Team honors were won by Normal University High (298), followed by Springfield (325) and Mattoon (351).
M-S was fourth with a team composite of 360.
