Timberview Lane lights up for Christmastime

It’s Christmastime. And Mahomet residents also know it’s time to head to the “Griswold” house.

As one of the most sought out Christmas displays in Mahomet, George and Dixie Schoonover have delighted both young and old with their elaborate Christmas light display at their home at 701 N. Timberview Drive for more than 30 years.

What started out a few lights has now grown into 100,000 lights throughout the property. And with wooden cut-outs made by neighbors, Alvin and the Chipmunks singing Christmas carols, a lighted toy train and  giant evergreen trees covered in lights, the Schoonover property lights up much of Timberview Drive.

But the Schoonover’s home is not the only reason Mahomet residents travel to the west side of Mahomet. On the corner of Timberview Drive and State Street, a sign made by Bill Taylor points the way to the Christmas scene.

After 5 p.m. daily, cars creep along the quarter-mile stretch of road, stopping frequently to take in home after home with trees, bushes and lawns adorned with lights.

The Timberview Christmas display will stay lit until December 31. Alvin and the Chipmunks sing until 9 p.m. Lights stay on until 10 p.m.

  1. So sad there’s no mention of the Ayers house at 705. It may not be as dramatic as Schoonover’s, but it’s still an awesome sight and there’s usually a night when Santa comes to see the kids who drive by. BTW, there may be a typo in your 4th paragraph.
