Three MSJHS Golfers advance to IESA State Tournament
The fledgling first-year Mahomet-Seymour Junior High School boys’ golf program resulted with three of the six squad members qualifying for the IESA state tournament.
M-S had no regular-season meets, but competed in the sectional at Eagle Ridge Golf Course, in Paris, on Thursday (Sept. 9).
In a field of 61 participants, Bulldogs Kelton Hennesy and Colton McClure placed third and fourth, respectively.
Hennesy carded a round of 77 (40-37) and finished two shots behind the medalist.
McClure shot a 79 (38-41). Both are eighth-graders.
The third M-S athlete to reach state, which will be held on Friday (Sept. 17) at Metamora Fields, is ninth-place finisher Dawson Freeman. The sixth-grader fired an 84 (42-42) and bettered the qualifying score by one stroke.
A total of 10 players advanced from the Paris Sectional to the state finals. Mahomet-Seymour was the only school at the Paris site to secure three state berths.
The three Bulldogs who did not advance to state were all eighth-graders. Zachary Blumenshine was 15th with a 90 (47-43), Cole Thrasher was 20th with a 94 (48-46) and Camden Snodsmith was 22nd with a 96 (49-47).
When tryouts were held in August, a total of 37 prospects tried out for either the boys’ or the girls’ team.
