Talon Decker Qualifies for the IKWF State Tournament
Talon Decker became the first Illinois Kids Wrestling Federation State Qualifier since the MS Youth Wrestling Club was reformed 4 years ago.
Decker finished second in the IKWF Central Sectional held in Monticello. He won his first three matches via pin, including the semi-final match which clinched a state tournament berth. Decker lost the championship match via tech fall.
Decker (19-7) will wrestle at the state tournament March 13-14 at the BMO Harris Bank Center in Rockford. He will compete in a 24-man bracket with the top 6 earning medals.
Five other MSYWC wrestlers chose to participate in the IKWF postseason, and 3 wrestlers advanced to the Central Sectional:
Marco Casillas, 3-2, DNP
Brock Evans, 0-2, DNP
Tate Kimball, 0-2 DNP
Beau Back and Izaiah Brotherton were Sectional alternates.
The wrestling club is open to K-5 boys and girls in the Mahomet-Seymour school district and had 65 participants this year. The club had representatives competing in 8 tournaments across central Illinois during the winter. Fifteen of the 65 wrestlers are 5th graders and will move on to wrestle for Coach James Heinold’s successful Jr High program next year.
The club will celebrate its accomplishments with an end of season celebration on March 9th.
