“Take Me Fishing: Summer Splash Edition” Kicks Off a Day of Outdoor Fun at Lake of the Woods

Families and outdoor enthusiasts are invited to cast a line and dive into summer at the “Take Me Fishing: Summer Splash Edition,” set for July 26 at the Peninsula in Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve.

The festivities begin at 9:00 a.m. with the annual “Take Me Fishing” event, where participants of all skill levels can try their hand at fishing in the scenic preserve. Volunteers and naturalists will be on hand to provide basic fishing instruction and share tips, making it an ideal opportunity for beginners and families with young children to learn the basics and enjoy the thrill of catching their first fish.

Following the fishing event, Summer Splash continues with a variety of water-themed and educational activities running through 3:00 p.m. Highlights include:

  • Live fish displays and a Cornbelt Dive Team demonstration (9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.)
  • Traveling Science Center exhibits (10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.)
  • Kayak and canoe instruction, pedal boats, and pond discovery (11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.)
  • Inflatable water slide, bubbles, and sidewalk chalk for kids (11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.)
  • Food trucks offering lunch and treats throughout the afternoon

The event is a collaboration between the Champaign County Forest Preserve District and the Upper Sangamon River Conservancy, aiming to provide a memorable, family-friendly day that celebrates the outdoors and encourages environmental stewardship.

Admission is free, and all ages are encouraged to attend. Organizers recommend arriving early for the best fishing spots and to take full advantage of the day’s schedule. There is no rain date, so participants are encouraged to check the forecast and come prepared for summer weather.
