Mahomet residents will notice a change in their water rates in 2022.
The Village of Mahomet approved their increase on April 26 while Sangamon Valley Public Water District approved their changes in January. SVPWD serves residents north of I-74 and east of IL-47 whereas the Village serves all other incorporated areas.
SVPWD approved their first increase since 2013, moving the indoor rate from $6.60 per 1,000 gallons of water to $8.00 per 1,000 gallons. The Village moved their rate from $6.00 per 1,000 gallons ($.60 per 100 gallons) to $6.30 per 1,000 gallons ($.63 per 100 gallons) up to 50,000 gallons. After 50,000 gallons, the price increases to $5.70 per 1000 gallons ($.57).
Both SVPWD and the Village of Mahomet have standard fees associated with each bill. Mahomet charges a $5 fee with each water bill whereas SVPWD charges $19.55 for the first 2,000 gallons of water used.
The average monthly water bill for Village customers in 2021 was $36.50 based on 5,250 gallons used. With the increase, the Village projects that the average monthly bill based on 5,250 gallons will be $38.08, not including additional fees. SVPWD customers can expect a monthly bill of $43.55, including additional fees.
For outside water usage, the Village still charges $6.30 per 1,000 gallons used for the first 50,000 gallons of water. After 50,000 gallons, the price decreases to $5.70 per 1000 gallons ($.57). An $8.00 charge for the second meter is also assessed. SVPWD does not charge for a second meter, and charges a universal rate of $8.65 per 1,000 gallons used.
After raising the sewage rate for consecutive years, the Village of Mahomet held their rate at the fiscal year 2022 rate with every 5000 gallons costing $10.60 per 1000 gallons of water ($1.06 per 100 gallons). A $5 sewer fee is also assessed. Mahomet’s average monthly bill in 2021 was $60.65, based on 5250 gallons.
SVPWD charges a base rate of $16.18 for the first 2,000 gallons on a sewer bill, then upped the rate to $9.15 per 1,000 gallons for the upcoming year. The average monthly cost for wastewater in SVPWD will be $43.63.
Both the Village and SVPWD are paying down debt associated with plant upgrades within the last decade. Each also charges water connection fees as new development is established.
