The Mahomet Village Board of Trustees heard an update on the reconstruction of Sunny Acres Road during the Jan. 8 Board of Trustees meeting.
During the December Board of Trustees meeting, the Village board approved $800,000 in Surface Transportation Urban (STU) funds for the reconstruction project. The $800,000 accounts for 80 percent of the total project cost. The remaining 20 percent, and any overrun, will be funded by the local Capital Improvement Program (CIP) funds.
After four-years, the Village has currently accumulated half of the federal funding for the project. The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is allowing the village to obligate a few years of future federal funding in order to be able to do such a large project. The Village is obligating STU funding until the end of calendar year 2022 which will be fiscal year (FY) 2023.
An obligation of funds is a legal liability to disburse funds immediately or at a later date as a result of a series of actions.
The reconstruction project was designed in-house with land surveying and computer-aided drafting (CAD) assistance by Fehr Graham. The project involves the replacement of the 11-foot wide concrete lanes with the same width 7-inch thick concrete pavement and a 4-inch gravel drainage base layer, 4-foot wide rock shoulders that will be seal-coated, guard rail replacement at the railroad crossing, extensions of crossroad culverts, ditch grading, and restoration.
IDOT will open bids for the project on Friday, Jan. 18. Further updates will be provided closer to the start of construction.
Construction on Sunny Acres Road will begin south of the railroad tracks around April 1. This will allow for the school buses to run their regular routes until the end of the school year.
Once the south section is completed, Sunny Acres Road will then closed to thru traffic for four months. Access to homes along Sunny Acres Road will be granted through a one-way detour set up by the construction company. Residents in subdivisions nearby will have to access alternative routes to reach their destinations.
During the time of construction, the Village suggests that residents seek alternative routes whenever possible. The project contractor will provide a detour.
Construction is expected to be completed in August before the school year begins.
