Strom named Mahomet Public Library’s Employee of the Year
Mahomet Public Library’s Youth Services Librarian Rebecca (Becca) Strom has been named Employee of the Year by her co-workers.
A Mahomet native and a graduate of Mahomet-Seymour High School in 2016, Strom’s journey to librarianship began at Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame. There, she majored in creative writing, humanistic studies, and theatre. Her passion for working with children and teens was ignited during a summer job as a theatre counselor at a fine arts camp.
“That experience really helped me discover my love for working with children and teens,” Strom recalls.
Following her undergraduate studies, Strom pursued a master’s in library science, focusing on youth services at the University of Illinois. While studying, she honed her skills at the Champaign Public Library as a teen programming page. In May 2022, Strom stepped into her role at Mahomet Public Library just as she graduated.
Strom’s role as the Youth Services and Programming Librarian has been transformative for Mahomet Public Library. She has established deep connections with the community, particularly with children and teens.
“One of my favorite parts of the job is interacting with kids and teens and learning about their interests,” she says.
Strom has initiated several popular programs, including the Preschool Playdate, Elementary Explorers, and a teen creative writing club, each designed to foster creativity, teamwork, and self-expression.
Strom’s focus since joining Mahomet Public Library has been on fostering connections and inclusivity. She emphasizes that the library is more than just a place for books; it’s a community hub for learning, friendship, and growth.
“We want everyone to be able to utilize the library and its services,” Strom asserts, highlighting the importance of removing barriers to access.
When asked about her experience helping her hometown, Strom’s enthusiasm is evident.
“I really do have the best job,” she says, praising the dynamic community and her supportive colleagues. “I love being able to see the impact that my work has on the community.”
On being named Employee of the Year, Strom expressed deep gratitude towards her colleagues.
“It has really been so gratifying and inspiring,” she said, viewing the recognition as a motivator to continue enhancing the library’s services and community involvement.
