The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has released its latest list of pediatric high-risk ZIP codes for lead exposure, highlighting several communities in Champaign and Vermilion counties as areas of concern. This designation means that children living in these ZIP codes are at increased risk for lead poisoning, a serious health threat especially for young children.
In Champaign County, ZIP codes including parts of Champaign, Urbana, St. Joseph, Seymour, Homer and Rantoul are listed as high-risk.
In Vermilion County, Danville, Oakwood and surrounding areas are among those identified.
The entire list can be found here.
The IDPH’s updated list is based on factors such as the age of housing, prevalence of lead-based paint, and previous blood lead level screening results. Children in these high-risk areas are required by state law to be tested for lead exposure before entering daycare, preschool, or kindergarten.
Why This Matters:
Lead poisoning can cause irreversible damage to a child’s brain and nervous system, resulting in learning difficulties, behavioral problems, and other long-term health issues. The risk is highest in older homes built before 1978, when lead-based paint was commonly used.
Community Response and Next Steps:
Local health departments in Champaign and Vermilion counties are urging parents to have their children tested for lead, especially if they live in the affected ZIP codes. Free or low-cost testing is available, and families are encouraged to contact their healthcare providers or local health departments for more information.
The IDPH continues to work with local agencies to provide education, resources, and support to families in high-risk areas. For more information, families can visit the IDPH’s lead poisoning prevention page or contact their local health department.
