Spring Sports take the field: Softball, baseball and soccer round-up

Thanks to favorable weather conditions, Mahomet-Seymour’s softball team took advantage of the opportunity and played games each of the first three days this week.

Freshman Aubrie Shore hit home runs in each of the four games played between Monday and Wednesday.

Teammates with hits in all four games were Layne Acree, Madi Scott, Ashley Wheeler and Ashley Campbell.

M-S (5-3) opened the week with a 14-1 triumph over Centennial in a game it led 7-1 after two innings.

On Tuesday, the Bulldogs lost an Apollo Conference doubleheader to Effingham 12-9 and 16-7. M-S fell behind early in both games, trailing 6-0 in the third inning of the first game and 8-0 in the second inning of the nightcap.

A day later, the team returned to its winning ways by outscoring Urbana 9-7, scoring the three decisive runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

In the four games, Shore was 8-for-16 at the plate and drove in nine runs. Overall, she has a streak of five straight games with a home run.

Acree was 7-for-16. Campbell and Wheeler were each 6-for-13. Scott was 6-for-14.

Scott had five RBI in the four games and slugged a home run against Effingham.

Wheeler pounded two home runs against Urbana. Kameryn Brotherton also homered against the Tigers.

The pitching chores were split between Wheeler and Shore, who each appeared in three of the games. Wheeler, picked up both wins, and struck out 10 in 15 innings.

Shore, who took both losses, fanned eight in 11 innings.

Other offensive heroes during the four-game spree included Julia McNaught, who had two hits and four RBI against Centennial; Carlee Scott, who had two hits in each game against Effingham; and Allison Nofziger, who had two hits against Centennial.

Brotherton, who had five RBI in the four games, swatted two hits in the first game against Effingham.

Collectively, M-S batters hit at a .395 clip (47-for-119) during the first three days this week.

Baseball

After extending its season-opening winning streak to five games, the Bulldogs lost back-to-back decisions on consecutive days.

The M-S pitcher of record in all three games were relievers.

The Bulldogs needed 10 innings to top Effingham 6-4 in its Apollo Conference opener on Tuesday.

Brooks Coetzee was 3-for-3, including a 10th-inning run-scoring triple that snapped a 3-3 tie.

Teammates Cory Noe and Austin Biehl each went 2-for-5.

Kyle Mumm pitched five innings of one-hit ball in relief of Tanner Kirts. He walked two and struck out eight. Noe was summoned for a final-out save.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Effingham handed the Bulldogs a 6-3 setback.

Biehl had two hits and Jordan Veldman drove in two runs. Biehl, who worked two innings in relief of Kyle Kinney, took the loss.

On Wednesday, M-S dropped a 6-5 decision to Olympia.

Coetzee was 3-for-3 with a single, double and home run. He knocked in two runs.

Dylan Gates and Veldman each went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Tyler Kirts pitched 1 2/3 innings and took his first loss of the season. He followed Dawson Finch and Gates to the mound.

M-S is 5-2 overall and 1-1 in Apollo Conference action.

Girls’ soccer

Nyah Biegler scored two goals and had one assist and Bulldog teammate Meredith Johnson-Monfort had one goal and two assists as the team blanked Lincoln 7-0 on Tuesday.

M-S is 8-2 overall and 2-0 in Apollo Conference matches. The shutout was the seventh for goalkeeper Sarah Hohenstein, who collected one save.

Also reaching the scoring column for M-S were Haley Lester, Maddy Wade and Mackenzie Moore.

Other Bulldogs with assists were Erin Lenschow and Michaela Schoolcraft.
