Slight increase in Illinois motor fuel tax scheduled for July 1
The Illinois gas tax will increase again on July 1, 2020.
The automatic increase is part of the 2019 legislative session that doubled the motor fuel tax—from $.19 to $.38 as part of Gov. JB Pritzker’s $45 billion Rebuild Illinois plan. The law also allows for the tax to increase with inflation In each subsequent year without legislative approval if the amount is under 1 cent.
The 2020 tax increase will add another $0.007 onto the current $.038 rate.
Additional taxes will be placed on diesel fuel, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), liquefied natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG).
The tax on diesel fuel will increase from $0.455 to $0.462, LPG and LNG from $0.455 to $0.462 and CNG from $0.38 to $0.387.
