Six Bulldogs receive unanimous votes for Apollo Conference first-team
By Fred Kroner
Five of the six Mahomet-Seymour wrestlers who were chosen for the Apollo Conference first team were unanimous selections.
The Bulldogs’ universal picks were seniors Colton Crowley (220 pounds), Mateo Casillas (195 pounds), Camden Harms (285 pounds), Caden Hatton (113 pounds) and Brennan Houser (182 pounds).
Crowley was a four-time all-conference first-teamer. Casillas and Houser were each three-time first-teamers after being placed on the second team as freshmen. Hatton was a repeat choice and Harms was a first-time honoree.
Also chosen for the first team was junior Donovan Lewis (138 pounds), also a first-time choice.
The Bulldogs’ first-teamers had a cumulative season record of 268-65.
M-S’ Apollo Conference champions were well-represented on the second team where seven of the 14 wrestlers were Bulldogs.
The second-teamers were Gage Decker (152 pounds), Camden Heinold (132 pounds), Cale Hillard (170 pounds), Colton McClure (106 pounds), Tallen Pawlak (145 pounds), Justus Vrona (120 pounds) and Reese Wilson (126 pounds).
Mahomet-Seymour Boys’ Basketball
Senior Wyatt Bohm was the lone Mahomet-Seymour athlete to gain recognition on the Apollo All-Conference boys’ basketball team, chosen by the league’s seven coaches.
Bohm was on the five-player, all-senior second unit.
For the season, Bohm scored in double figures in 13 games and logged a team-best 9.2 scoring average. He was also the top rebounder (6.1 per-game average) and distributed the most assists (92). Bohm had season-high totals of 21 points and 17 rebounds.
Conference champion Mount Zion was 12-0 in league play and had two of the five first-team selections, both of whom are underclassmen. Lincoln (9-2) was second in the Apollo. M-S and Charleston were each 6-6 in conference games and tied for third place.
The Bulldogs finished the season with an overall record of 14-17.
Mahomet-Seymour Girls’ Basketball
Two Mahomet-Seymour seniors were honored with all-league status on the Apollo Conference girls’ basketball team.
Savannah Orgeron was named to the five-player first team.
Durbin Thomas was chosen for the five-player second team.
The Bulldog duo ranked first or second in the majority of the team’s categories during a 24-10 season.
Orgeron was the top scorer (17.3) and rebounder (129). She also led the team in free throw accuracy (79 percent) and had the most three-pointers (70). Among squad members who logged at least 100 minutes for the season, she had the fewest turnovers (35). Orgeron was also second in blocked shots (24).
She tallied 1,316 points in her prep career and led – or shared – the team-lead in scoring in 31 points.
Thomas led the team in minutes played (403), assists (95) and steals (82). She had the second-best scoring average (7.2) and was second in three-pointers made (38).
Thomas broke the school record for career assists, finishing with 292, two more than previous record-holder Vicki Wheeler, who played for the Bulldogs from 1985-89.
Three other schools also had two players who warranted all-conference mention, but no league team had more than two selections.
Lincoln (12-0) was the conference titlist. Taylorville (8-4) was second in the seven-school league, followed by Mount Zion (7-4) and M-S (7-5).
