By Fred Kroner
Aubrie Shore pitched her first no-hitter of the season on Monday (May 10), but the second consecutive no-hitter for the Mahomet-Seymour softball team.
Shore stymied Tri-County in a 22-2 decision at home. She walked two and struck out a season-high 13. Last week, Karley Yergler fired a no-hitter for the Bulldogs.
Shore, who was backed by an errorless defense, struck out each Tri-County starter at least once and struck out the side in four innings.
Shore was backed by a 19-hit attack which featured a 5-for-5 performance from Ashley Campbell, the first Bulldog to register a five-hit game this season.
Campbell and Yergler (who was 4-for-5) have each collected hits in all 12 M-S games this spring. Abigail Akers contributed two hits.
In all, 11 Bulldogs had hits.
Campbell delivered five runs batted in. Yergler knocked in three runs in addition to scoring four runs. Sydney Ward also scored four runs.
On Tuesday (May 11), M-S scored the most runs at Mattoon, but had to settle for a doubleheader split. The Green Wave won the opener 2-1 before the Bulldogs responded with a 14-8 triumph in Game 2.
The second game marked the seventh time M-S has scored in double figures this season.
Shore pounded three hits in each game and also earned the second-game win, pitching five innings, walking no one and striking out two.
Yergler and Maddie Cortez each laced four hits in the nightcap. Two of Yergler’s hits were home runs, raising her team-high total to 12.
Campbell stroked three hits and Jenna Wade contributed two hits in the second game.
M-S broke open a one-run game with a five-run seventh-inning that created the final score.
Yergler took the first-game loss, despite walking no one and striking out 11 in seven innings. She also pitched a scoreless seventh-inning in the finale.
M-S (10-4) had a six-game winning streak snapped at Mattoon. The Bulldogs return to action on Friday (May 14) at home against Fisher.
