Shoaf sets new school record in 110-meter high hurdles

By Fred Kroner

Senior C.J. Shoaf, who already owns one school record for the Mahomet-Seymour boys’ track and field team, set a mark in a different event on Wednesday (May 5) in the team’s outdoor opener at Mount Zion.

Shoaf was the Bulldogs’ lone double winner in individual events, taking first in both the 110-meter high hurdles and the high jump.

His hurdles time of 14.66 seconds shattered the school standard set in 2013 by Zaniel Zilewicz, whose time was 14.67 seconds.

Making Shoaf’s feat remarkable, M-S coach Keith Pogue said, was that he was “running into the wind.”

Shoaf also captured the high jump, leaping 6 feet, 9 ¾ inches. He set the school mark last year at an indoor meet (6-10).

M-S prevailed in the four-school meet with 116 ½ points. Runner-up Mount Zion had 75 ½ points and Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond totaled 69 points.

The Bulldogs had the winner in seven of 18 events.

In both the 200 meters and the 3,200 meters, the Bulldogs secured 1-2 finishes.

Senior Will Parrott was victorious in the 200 meters (24.94 seconds) with teammate Nick Golden taking second (25.02).

In a battle of juniors, Kyle Nofziger edged Joseph Scheele in the 3,200-meter race. Nofziger was timed in 10 minutes, 10.42 seconds. Scheele was on his heels at 10:10.69.

Senior Joe Taylor was the 300-meter intermediate hurdles winner (50.72 seconds).

In the discus, sophomore Robert Byron was the winner (130 feet, 3 inches).

Also emerging victorious was M-S’ 800-meter relay foursome of Skyler Yancy, Deangelo Hughey, Parrott and Quenton Rogers. Their combined time was 1:35.38.

Three of those four runners helped the 400-meter relay to a second-place finish. That unit consisted of Yancy, Hughey, Tyler Lewis and Rogers. They were timed in 45.01 seconds.

Lewis ran second in the 400 meters (55.62 seconds), Golden was the runner-up in the triple jump (36-2 ½) and Karson McKee’s best in the shot put (39 feet, 6 inches) was good enough to earn him second-place points.

Five individuals and two relays contributed third-place finishes.

Rogers was third in the 100 meters (11.85 seconds) as was Parrott in the long jump (18-9 ½). Wyatt Bohm was third in the 110 high hurdles (24.00), Sam Garber was third in the discus (122-11) and Clayton Kessler was third in the pole vault (11-5).

Both distance relays ended in third place.

Sharing the baton on the 1,600 foursome were Lewis, Jayvon Irwin, Elis Tira and Alex O’Brian. Their time was 4:12.37.

The 3,200-meter relay consisted of Matthew Sims, Benjamin Wallace, Karsten Waisath and Nathan Lundstrom. Their combined time was 9:18.74.

M-S will return to action on Friday (May 7) in the Monticello Invitational.
