School board to vote on sale of Sangamon
The Mahomet-Seymour School board will vote to sell Sangamon Elementary for $750,000 at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, December 13.
1000 Churchill, LLC owners Shawn Tabeling, Chris Hartman and Carlos Nieto will purchase the property.
The district lowered the minimum bid on the public property to $600,000 on October 27. At that time they opened the bidding process until November 20, but with 1000 Churchill coming in at the previous asking price of $750,000, the board will also vote to close the process at Monday’s meeting.
Churchill representative Jill Guth told the Mahomet Citizen’s Fred Kroner that 1000 Churchill, LLC has “no intention of demolishing any parts of the building at least anytime soon. “We think there is potential to re-use the existing building.”
She said that the building may get some new carpeting, but the group is unsure of additional changes. Guth said the owners are hoping to use classrooms as office space for service-based businesses, home-based businesses, a fitness facility or a daycare.
Sangamon students will continue to be housed at the elementary school through the end of the 2017-2018 school year.
1000 Churchill, LLC. plans to begin filling the almost 30 classrooms with businesses by Septembre 2018. They will be required to put $150,000 in earnest money down with the school district prior to purchase.
1000 Churchill, LLC. is constructing additional commercial space at the intersection of IL Rt 150 and Churchill Road.
Mahomet-Seymour Superintendent Lindsay Hall told Kroner, “This is not typically the way things go; it’s pretty unique, but we like unique in a good way.”
In 2015, the three parcels that make up the Sangamon Elementary school were appraised at $2.2 million.
The east wing of the school was built in 1951. The western portion was added in 1988.
