School Board passes budget, MAYC enrichment a reality
After a public hearing on Monday, the Mahomet-Seymour School board passed a budget for the 2013-2014 fiscal year.
Accountant Hope Wheeler from CliftonLarsonAllen also presented findings on the annual audit of the school district.
MAYC President Margaret White presented the Mahomet-Seymour School District with a $33,000 check as the first installment to their $150,000 commitment from the MAYC and Mahomet-Seymour School District merger.
MAYC announced total enrollment for the first session of Bulldogs Learning and Succeeding Together (B.L.A.S.T.) Thursday.
With only eight spots remaining at Sangamon Elementary, MAYC will serve 150 students through the six-week enrichment program.
Thirty-percent of the students enrolled in the program previously attended MAYC or qualified for fee waivers. There are 70 students enrolled in four classes at Sangamon, and 80 students enrolled in four classes at Lincoln Trail.
“A limited number of students were unable to participate as some of our B.L.A.S.T. classes reached their maximum enrollment the first day of registration,” said Program Coordinator for Enrichment Opportunities Kelly Cramer. “Although we wish that we could have accepted all who registered, our goal is to continue to work to increase the opportunities for the students in our district.”
The first session of enrichment courses will run Sept. 23 through Oct. 24. The second session will begin Nov. 11.
MSHS Athletic Director Matt Hensley and MSJHS athletic director Justin Franzen reported athletic participation numbers to the school board.
Hensley said numbers have held steady in all sports, except girls’ basketball and softball have seen a decline in recent years.
Board members Valerie Woodruff and Terry Greene suggested a push for an afterschool speech program at the high school.
MSJHS will not host a fall play this year so students can also participate in speech. Students will perform a spring play, instead.
Franzen said MSJHS has seen a dip in girls track participation, but wrestling numbers are on the rebound. All other sports see consistent numbers at the junior high level.
Superintendent Rick Johnston announced that 455 viewers watched the MSHS football team open their season against Prairie Central on Bulldog TV. Parts of Friday’s homecoming parade and the football game against Pontiac can be viewed live tonight on Bulldog TV.
