Kindergarten through second grade students had a busy day Wednesday as students from Middletown Prairie Elementary traveled to Sangamon Elementary to preview the second grade musical, and Sangamon students dressed up for a good cause.
Classes of second grade students performed their concert, Sangamon Pops, directed by Music Teacher Sue Keeble. Kindergarteners from Middletown Prairie were their audience, along with first grade students and second grade classes who performed the same show at another time.
The program, Keeble announced to the near capacity audience, consisted of music from popular movies, such as Toy Story and Despicable Me, as well as songs popular on the radio. Bucket drumming and poetry reading completed the show.
Kindergarteners in attendance may have noticed Sangamon students were dressed a bit unusually. That was because they were participating in Sangamon’s Day of Caring. According to Mark Cabutti, Sangamon principal, students were asked to bring a $2 donation to school. One dollar would go toward the American Cancer Society’s “Heroes Among Us”, which is part of the Relay for Life fundraiser. A second dollar would go to Crisis Nursery, which serves children ages 0-6 whose parents are temporarily not able to care for them. Students who brought money were told to dress up like superheroes, in support of Relay for Life, or dress down in comfortable clothing, to support Crisis Nursery.
Many Sangamon students dressed in sweat pants, pajamas, or superhero attire. Sangamon students raised about $921 for the causes. According to Cabutti, that money will be divided up equally among Crisis Nursery and the Heroes Among Us programs.
