Salt and Light raises money through can-less food drive
Donation cans for the Salt and Light can-less food drive can be found at JT Walker’s and Twist and Shout Dance and Cheer through June 30.
Salt and Light is a nonprofit organization based in Champaign, which help those in need in Champaign County with food, clothing, financial assistance, financial counseling and computer training.
This is the fourth year Salt and Light has run a can-less food drive. Because the organization works with the Eastern Illinois foodbank, every dollar donated to Salt and Light can be used to purchase $10 of food through the foodbank.
Cans which look like paint cans decorated with the Campbell’s soup label have been placed in 100 businesses throughout Champaign County. Donations can also be made through saltandlightministry.org.
Salt and Light Development Director Lindy Gault said that while many people think about the needs of others during the holidays, donations during summer months are low because people are traveling or the kids or out of school, and they just do not think about donating.
Throughout the year, Salt and Light feeds around 350 families a week. During the summer months, they see an increase of children and families because the children are not receiving lunches at school.
100% of donations to the can-less food drive go towards purchasing food.
Businesses that want to host a can should contact Salt and Light Ministries at saltandlightministry.org.
