The best boys’ soccer season in Mahomet-Seymour history came to an end on Tuesday with a 3-2 loss to Morton in a Class 2A Bloomington Sectional semifinal match.
The Bulldogs end with a 17-5-4 record and the school mark for wins in a season.
After falling behind 1-0, M-S rallied and held a 2-1 lead at halftime against Morton, which is ranked third in the state.
The first M-S goal came from Kadyn Jones, who scored following a corner kick that the Morton goalkeeper deflected.
“Kadyn Jones was waiting for it and drilled it through the jungle of players to tie the game,” M-S coach Jeremy Davis said.
Teammate Colten Brunner hit the go-ahead goal, following a free-kick by Jones.
“It deflected and Colten Brunner charged in like an herbivorous rhinoceros to ram the ball into the goal,” Davis said.
Bulldog goalkeeper Keagon Ashby did his part to keep his team in contention, but the Potters (23-2-1) netted the decisive goal in the final 6 minutes.
“In the second half, Keagon Ashby played great,” Davis said.
The M-S coach said he was pleased by the performance of a team he considered an overachieving group this fall.
“Overall, I was a proud papa throughout the season,” Davis said. “I thought this was going to be a down year for us based upon how many seniors we lost last year, and an entirely new defense.
“The boys played wonderfully tonight. They were right with Morton all night.”
Jones established a school record for combined goals and assists in a career, with 65. Teammate Jake Janda tied the school mark for goals in a season, with 29.
Jones and Janda are two of the team’s nine seniors.
