Powell, Jansen earn medals at Wheaton North Classic

The state-ranked Bulldogs (14th in Class 2A, according to milepslit.com), had three runners crack the 20-minute mark on Saturday (Oct. 2) in the flighted Wheaton North Classic.
Seven varsity races were held, with No. 1 runners competing with the No. 1s from other schools.
“Our team competed well against an all-3A lineup,” M-S coach Jama Grotelueschen said. “While this meet had your typical open races, the varsity race was flighted, with only one runner per team racing at a time.
“While the girls all raced well individually, this weekend confirmed what we already knew, that our pack running team really benefits from the friendly competition of teammates in the same race.”
M-S’ top runner, sophomore Ava Boyd, was 16th in the flight for No. 1 runners with a time of 19 minutes, 31.07 seconds on a 2.95-mile course.
In the flight for No. 2 runners, Bulldog freshman Chloe Bundren was 12th in 19:24.33.
In the flight for No. 3 runners, M-S senior Elizabeth Sims was 13th in 20:01.21.
In the flight for No. 4 runners, Bulldog junior Callie Jansen was ninth in 19:58.07.
In the flight for No. 5 runners, M-S freshman Ava Jansen was 10th in 20:28.61.
In the flight for No. 6 runners, Bulldog senior Emily Bednar was 11th in 20:32.15.
In the flight for No. 7 runners, M-S senior Klein Powell was sixth in 20:05.76.
Powell and Callie Jansen both earned medals for their top-10 performances individually.
In a 203-runner freshmen-sophomore race, the Bulldogs had two top-50 competitors.
Freshman Morgan Waisath was 42nd in 21:40.02 and sophomore Lauren Bednar was 50th in 21:53.67.
The other Bulldog in the freshmen-sophomore race was freshman Gabby Reeves. She was 140th in 25:55.42.
There were 158 participants in an open race for runners who weren’t in either of the other two races.
M-S senior Grace Lietz was 27th in 20:47.25.
Three teammates were in the same race.
Senior Delaney King was 33rd (20:57.73), senior Alyssa Christensen was 99th (23:46.41) and junior Hannah Hofbauer was 112th (24:32.57).
Powell, King and Waisath all registered their best times of the season.
M-S returns to action on Saturday (Oct. 9) in Metamora’s Runnin’ Red Invitational.
