The Village of Mahomet Pension Board voted 5-0 Friday morning to award former Mahomet Police Officer Jeremy Scharlow a disability pension.
During a confrontation with Dracy Pendleton in the 500 block of South Vine Street on May 7, 2016, Scharlow was shot in the arm.
Pendleton, who was also injured, fled the scene. He died a week later in an abandoned house in the Shawnee National Forest.
Scharlow was released from the hospital within hours of the altercation but later developed an infection in the wound. Scharlow underwent physical therapy for rehabilitation, but two years later, he still cites numbness in pinky finger and pain in his forearm.
The physical injuries are not what keeps Scharlow from returning to work at the Mahomet Police Department, though.
Scharlow suffers from symptoms related to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) including panic attacks, extreme or irrational fear, hypervigilance, nightmares and difficulty being in groups.
Under the care of several psychologists, Scharlow is still not cleared to rejoin his post as a police officer. In May of 2017, after nine years of service, Scharlow’s position at the Mahomet Police Department was terminated.
Under the disability pension, Scharlow will receive 65-percent of his salary as a Mahomet Police officer per year for life.
