Obituary: Mary Lou Covault
INDEPENDENCE- Mary Lou Covault, 85, of Independence died at her home in Independence, Iowa on Monday November 9, 2020.
Mary Lou will forever be remembered by her friends and family, she had two children: son David Covault of Independence, Iowa and daughter Rachelle Hubble of Mahomet, Illinois, along with their seven grandchildren; Jake Covault, Justin Covault, Crystal (Mike) Hulse, Jack Hubble, Clay Hubble,
Cole Hubble and Elle Hubble. Her two great grandchildren, Emma Lou Covault and Piper Covault.
Mary Lou was born on April 19, 1935 in Decorah, Iowa the daughter of David and Muriel (Foltz) Thompson. She was raised on a farm in rural Burr Oak, IA. She was a 1952 graduate of Decorah High School. After high school, Mary Lou went on a trip to visit her sister in Seattle, Washington with friends. There she met Lloyd Eugene “Gene” Covault. They were married one year later on December 11th, 1954 at Seattle Methodist Church in Seattle, Washington. Mary Lou worked at Boeing Aircraft during her husband’s time in the U.S. Navy. After Gene’s honorable discharge from the military, they moved to Waterloo, Iowa where Mary Lou worked at the Rath Packing plant. When Gene became a pilot for Eastern Airlines they moved around to many states. In the early 1970’s, they settled in Stillman Valley, Illinois as Gene commuted to O’Hare airport in Chicago. Mary Lou was a full-time homemaker and loved cooking, working outside in the garden and was very active in her church. For many years, she enjoyed helping Gene take care of the farmette while they raised two children together. Mary Lou was a true testimony of sacrifice, integrity, hard work and enjoyed fellowship with family and friends. She had many friends from church that were like family. She enjoyed studying the bible, teaching, and mentoring others about God’s love. Her and Gene were true partners in life and they worked hard together. They also had many fun times boating and fishing on the Mississippi River and Lake Delhi, Iowa. When her children were in Junior High School she volunteered at the Rockford Rescue Mission helping those in need with the Pitney family. She eventually managed a women and children’s shelter and opened a good will type store for RRM in Rockford, Illinois.
Mary Lou loved children and she was fortunate enough to live by all of her grandchildren at different times. She lived in Idaho and Iowa closer to David’s family and then moved to Mahomet, Illinois in 2005 to be closer to Rachelle and her family.
In 2018, Mary Lou moved to Independence, Iowa to be closer to her son, David and his children.
She is preceded in death by her husband Gene Covault, they were married 60 years and parents, David and Muriel Thompson and a sister, Marjorie Bersie.
She is survived by her brother-in-law and sister-in-law Dale and Pat White of Waverly, Iowa.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. The Reiff Family Center is assisting the family with arrangements.
