The Illinois Department of Transportation announces that nighttime closures of one direction of Interstate 74 at Mattis Avenue in Champaign resume tonight, May 19.
The closures are necessary to install new bridge beams and will run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. as follows:
- May 19-20: Westbound lanes closed
- May 24: Westbound lanes closed
- May 25-26: Eastbound lanes closed
- May 27: Eastbound lanes if needed for weather or other delays
A detour will be posted, and Illinois State Police will be present to assist during the closures.
This work is part of a larger project to rebuild the I-57/74 interchange. That construction is scheduled to begin in August.
Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.
